Who handles what
- IfYour tree fell on your houseThenYour homeowner policy is usually the first place to look, both for the structure and, often, for removing the part of the tree that is on the house.
- IfA neighbor's healthy tree fell on your house in a stormThenIn many cases your own policy still handles your damage. Negligence questions arise when a tree was visibly dead or diseased beforehand.
- IfA tree fell in the yard and hit nothingThenRemoval may not be covered, or only up to a small limit. Check the policy wording.
- IfA tree is down across a public streetThenReport it to the city or county roads department rather than clearing it yourself.
- IfA limb is tangled in utility linesThenOnly the utility or its contractors should clear it. Report it and wait.
The order of work
When a tree lands on a roof, the sequence matters. First, the utility confirms there is no electrical hazard. Next, a tree service removes the weight from the structure in sections, ideally lifting rather than dragging so branches do not tear more roofing on the way off. Only then can the roof opening be measured and tarped, and any interior water addressed.
Trying to cover a roof while a tree still rests on it usually means doing the work twice. Ask the tree service and the tarping provider to coordinate, or find one provider who can do both safely.
Leave the stump and trunk sections in place until the adjuster has seen them or you have thorough photos. The condition of the wood, such as rot or a hollow center, can matter if responsibility is disputed between neighbors.
In the older parts of Colorado Springs, large street trees sometimes sit in the strip between sidewalk and curb. Ownership and care of those trees can vary by city rules, so ask the city forestry staff before cutting a tree in that strip.
Questions for a tree service after a storm
- Do you carry liability and workers' compensation insurance, and can I see certificates?
- Will you lift the tree off the roof or cut it in place, and how will you protect the roof?
- Is stump grinding and debris hauling included, or separate?
- Will you photograph the tree and the damage before and after for my claim?
- Do you have an arborist who can tell me whether other trees on the lot are now unsafe?
