Reading a quote fairly

After a large hailstorm or windstorm in Colorado Springs, demand for tarping can rise sharply overnight. Higher emergency rates are not automatically unfair, but every charge should be explained in writing. A one-line invoice that just says 'emergency service' is hard for an insurer to evaluate and hard for you to challenge.

Insurers generally expect emergency work to be reasonable for the situation. A careful description of what was done, with photos, makes it more likely the cost is accepted as part of the claim. If the same contractor will bid on the permanent repair, keep the emergency work on a separate agreement so you are free to choose someone else for the bigger job.

Questions to ask before the work starts

  1. How is the job priced: flat rate, by square footage, or time and materials?
  2. What material will you use, and how will it be anchored?
  3. Does the price include coming back if the tarp loosens in the next wind?
  4. Is removal of the tarp included when permanent repairs start?
  5. Will I get an itemized invoice and photos the same day?
