What to ask, and why

How do I avoid storm chasers?

Check the contractor with the regional building department, refuse big deposits, and read any assignment-of-benefits form before signing it.

Will a tarp actually hold?

A properly installed tarp is anchored and lapped to shed water. Ask how it will be fastened and how long it's expected to last.

Is emergency tarping covered?

Many policies cover reasonable steps to prevent further damage. Keep the invoice and photos.

Who handles the interior water?

Some storm contractors also extract and dry interior water; others only tarp and board. Ask who will handle drying so it starts as soon as the building is closed in.

How can I tell if a contractor is local?

Ask for a physical address and look it up, and check the contractor with the Pikes Peak Regional Building Department.
